Abbreviations :

St - stitch
Ch - chain
Slst - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet
Hdc - half double crochet
Dc - double crochet
DR - dark red yarn
N - navy yarn
DB - dark blue yarn

Project Note:

If you don’t like the sewing part in crochet projects, I would recommend you to assemble your squares as you go (I did it every 4 squares).

And to help you in the sewing process, I recommend you to leave the following tail length for each type of square :
For N/DB squares leave a 45cm (17,7”) N yarn tail, fasten off and weave in ends for DB yarn
For N/DR squares leave a 45cm (17,7”) N yarn tail, and a 30cm (11,8”) DR yarn tail
For DB/DR squares fasten off and weave in ends for both colors
For DR squares leave a 30cm (11,8”) yarn tail

Pattern :

The St Germain baby blanket is a patchwork of 36 granny squares work in 1 or 2 colors (these ones are in fact 2 half granny squares assembled). You’ll need :
4 DR granny squares
8 DR/DB half and half granny squares
8 DR/N half and half granny squares
16 DB/N half and half granny squares

HALF AND HALF GRANNY SQUARE (see the diagram below) :

With a 4,5mm (US7) hook, in DB yarn :

Round 1 : In a magic circle, work 3ch (count as 1dc), 1ch, 3dc, 2ch, 3dc, 1ch, 1dc, turn

Round 2 : 3ch (count as 1dc), 1ch, 3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch, (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in the ch2-space, 1ch, 3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch, 1dc in the last stitch (3rd ch of last round), turn

Round 3 : 3ch (count as 1dc), 1ch, 3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch, 3dc in the next ch1-space 1ch, (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in the ch2-space, 1ch, 3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch, 3dc in the next ch1-space, 1ch, 1dc in the last stitch (3rd ch of last round), turn

Round 4 to 7 : 3ch (count as 1dc), 1ch, *3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch*, repeat from * to * until the ch2-space, (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in the ch2-space, 1ch, *3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch*, repeat from * to * until last stitch, 1dc in the last stitch (3rd ch of last round).

In N yarn, with right side facing insert your hook in the magic circle, work your half granny square as describe below, making slst after the first and last dc of each row respectively in the DB last and first dc of each round.

Fasten off as describe in notes.

GRANNY SQUARE (see the diagram below) :

Round 1 : in a magic circle, work 3ch (count as 1dc), *2ch, 3dc*, repeat from * to * 2 times, 2ch, 2dc, slst in 3rd ch at the beginning of round, slst in the ch2-space,

Round 2 : 3ch (count as 1dc), 2ch, 3dc in the same ch2-space as the first dc, *1ch, (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in the next ch2-space*, repeat from * to * 2 times, 1ch, 2dc in the first ch2-space, slst in the 3rd ch at the beginning of round, slst in the ch2-space,

Round 3 : 3ch (count as 1dc), 2ch, 3dc in the same ch2-space as the first dc, *1ch, 3dc in the ch1-space, 1ch, (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in the next ch2-space*, repeat from * to * 2 times, 1ch, 3dc in the next ch1-space, 1 ch, 2dc in the first ch2-space, slst in the 3rd ch at the beginning of round, slst in the ch2-space,

Round 4 to 7 : work as previous round with 3dc in each ch1-space separated with 1ch and (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in each corner, and beginning with [3ch (count as 1dc), 2ch, 3dc in the same ch2-space as the first dc] and ending with [2dc in the first ch2-space, slst in the 3rd ch at the beginning of round, slst in the ch2-space].

Fasten off as described in notes.

Assemble the 36 squares as shown in the diagram below.

EDGING (see the diagram below)
With right side facing,
Round 1 : In DR, make a sc round, working 1sc per stitch and 3sc in each corner (place a marker on the 2nd one for each corner), slst in the 1st st to close the round,
Round 2 : In N, make a hdc round, working 1hdc per stitch and 3hdc in the marked st of each corner (place a marker in the 1st one), slst in the 1st st to close the round,
Round 3 : In DB, make a hdc round, working 1hdc per stitch and 2hdc in the marked st and the next 2 sts of each corner, slst in the 1st st to close round.

Fasten off, weave in ends.
